We Are the Hands and Feet of Jesus

As we seek to be a community of spirit-filled missionary disciples of Jesus, we find ourselves drawn to serve the community that we live in. At St. John the Baptist, we are in a unique position, being centrally located in downtown Ypsilanti. We have a wonderful opportunity to reach out and meet other members of the community through our food pantry.

There are so many hungry souls that regularly come through our pantry and bring the local community right to us. Seeing the faith that some of them display, even though they have fallen on hard times, can open our eyes to the simple, child-like faith that trusts in God’s providence and care.

We see this kind of faith modeled in the Gospels, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me” (Luke 18:38). The man who cried out was a blind beggar, however, despite his very real poverty, he maintained an incredible faith in Jesus, and Jesus, in response, ministered to him. How fortunate we are to have the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Our Lord! This is what we are called to do, and this is what the purpose of our food pantry is. It is a place where those who are crying out for help, for refuge, can find it. It exists to show the love and mercy of Christ to the people of our community. It exists to instill charity in each of their hearts, and also into the hearts of those who serve there.
