In the readings, the table of God’s Word is spread before the faithful, and the treasures of the Bible are opened to them. A lector proclaims the first or second reading at Mass. They may also lead the Psalm, in the absence of a cantor, as well as the Prayers of the Faithful.

The Liturgy of the Word should be celebrated in such a way as to encourage meditation and the pace of the reading should allow for recollection. The reader’s voice should correspond to the genre of the text. Through this act of service, under the action of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God may enter by the heart and the listener’s response through prayer may be prepared.
